Name Them One by One

Did you know that there was a recent study on “gratitude” called the “Count Your Blessings” study? It’s funny. When I read about this particular study, the lyrics of the old gospel hymn came flooding back to mind.

In case you need a refresher, here’s the first verse and chorus:

When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed,
When you are discouraged thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God has done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your many blessings, see what God has done.

Who would have known that there’s cutting-edge science found within those words?!

In this study, psychologist Bob Emmons had participants do the simplest thing: “At the end of each day take a moment to count your blessings by writing them down in a journal.”

That’s it.

Want to guess what happened? At the end of the study, the participants who engaged in this simple practice of thanksgiving were healthier – emotionally and physically – than the control group. Breaking news: simply counting your blessings made people healthier and happier.

There’s power in thanksgiving. Paul says in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Notice that Paul does not say, “Give thanks for all circumstances.” There are situations and circumstances we may find ourselves in that we may be FAR from thankful for; however, in the midst of all trials and situations, how important to remember and give thanks that Christ, who endured all and overcame, has not left us to live without hope, His presence or the promise of eternal life.

So, today, count your blessings and name them one by one. There’s power in that reminder!
