• Yeast and the Kingdom of God

Ran across an article recently that spurred some thought. It featured an interview with the Christian musical artist, LeCrae. He spoke of “culture” and how the church, too often, stands at a distance. “The reason why the church typically doesn’t engage culture is because we are scared of it.  We’re scared it’s going to somehow jump on us and corrupt us.  We’re scared it’s going to somehow mess up our good thing.  So we consistently move further and further away from the corruption, further and further away from the crime, further and further away from the post-modernity, further and further away from the relativism and secular humanism and we want…

  • Warning. This Could Be Dangerous.

My notebook fell open this morning to some notes from the Willow Creek, Global Leadership Conference our church hosted back in August of last year. Ran across the following prayer. Imagine what our days would look like if we made this an honest prayer on a daily basis… My Morning Prayer God, this is a new day. I freshly commit myself to the role you have invited me to play, as you are building your church in this world. I am awestruck again today that you include me in this grand life-giving, world transforming endeavor. So today I joyfully offer to you: my love, my heart, my talents, my energy,…

  • Kick Down that Door.

I just love it when a quote grabs me and shakes me violently. Ever had that happen to you? Seriously. You are just reading along when something registers with you. It resonates deeply and, well, just shakes you. The book Love Does by Bob Goff has done this to me several times. Seriously. I have recommended this book to so many people. In fact, I may have accidentally invited Bob Goff to read the book, Love Does by Bob Goff. LOVED this thought: “I once heard someone say that God had closed a door on an opportunity that they had hoped for. But I have always wondered if, when we want to do something that…

  • Be a Moon.

Recently, I had the opportunity to take a second trip with my wife to Haiti and check in on two orphanages our church sponsors. On the last day, I climbed to the roof of the guest house we were staying in because I wanted to catch the sunset on film. So, I pulled up a chair, positioned it in just the right spot, and took in God’s creation. It was beautiful watching the sun set. But, just before the sun disappeared over the horizon, I looked over my shoulder and saw the moon. I was caught completely unaware. It was breath taking. I believe it was Louie Giglio that referenced…

  • Love Accordingly.

I wrote down a quote in my journal yesterday that keeps coming back to me. It read, “Hey, Mark. Don’t allow schedule or routine to overpower God’s voice and direction for your life today. Listen. See. Respond. Love accordingly.” I have to work on this a lot. Being fully present. But, what if. What if we were fully present today to see the world through God’s eyes? If you see a need, meet it. It really is about two things: Loving God and Loving People. See the world, meet a need and love accordingly.

  • “But you shall receive POWER…”

‎”For if your life is just about satisfying the impulses of your sinful nature, then prepare to die. But if you have invited the Spirit to destroy these selfish desires, you will experience life. If the Spirit of God is leading you, then take comfort in knowing you are His children.” Romans 8:13-14 (the VOICE) I had a powerful night with our community group last night. We are taking several weeks to work through the BASIC video series that is led by Francis Chan. I love that Chan brings such an authenticity and truth that is just so hard to not be convicted by. Actually, change that. He brings the…

  • Life, More Abundantly

“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” John 10:10 (NKJV) There’s something you need to know. Ready? You were not created to settle for complacency. You were not put on this earth to simply just exist. You were created to live and live abundantly. I love what Jesus says to the Pharisees in John’s gospel, chapter 10. He reminds them that the enemy has come to distract, to rob us of life. But Jesus flips the coin and shares that He has come so that they may have life…

  • God Is So Good

Ok. I am about to make a pretty naïve and somewhat stunning confession. Ready? Early on in my ministry, I used to think that when I traveled abroad I was taking God into the mission field and sharing His love with those I encountered. It didn’t take me long to realize that that concept of ministry was quite flawed. For, you see, in my earliest encounters I discovered quite quickly that there was no need to take God into the mission field; He was already there. I have seen God at work in so many lives this week and in so many amazing ways. I think about the ride from…

  • It’s Amazing What $5 Can Do

Here’s a blog post from my wife this evening. Thought I would share. A Note From Nycki What an amazing day!  This has been the best trip back I could have asked for.  Although I am exhausted, sweaty, dirty, retaining fluid in my feet and hands, dirty, bruised, and dirty, I feel great!!!  It’s the feeling of being exactly where I am supposed to be at exactly the right time.  It’s the feeling of obedience, of saying yes and truly living.  What a great God we serve. The day started with the very early sunrise of Haiti after a wonderfully restful and needed sleep.  It’s the kind of sleep that…
