This past Sunday, we continued our Greater> series in Harvest by looking at the story of Haggai. I have to tell you that I love digging back into the pages of the Old Testament. In Haggai’s story, we learned that God was talking to His people, who were supposed to be building His house. Because of opposition (from the Samaritans) and economic hardship (due to a drought in the land), though, they had settled on playing it safe. They chose complacency over discipline, convenience over obedience. So God’s response?
“Go up into the mountains, bring down the timber, and build my house.”— Haggai 1:8
It’s amazing how three little commands can shed and shine such truth to us all today, right? God was telling His people that the journey might not be easy. Can I be honest? Doing God’s will can (an oftentimes will) be an uphill battle. Yet? He provides the timber. He will provide the means and resources needed to bring down the mountain in whatever season you stand in so that you might build His house and give Him the glory of which He is worthy.
Example. Say you’re in debt. Go up the mountain. Cut up those credit cards, stop spending more than you make, seek out good financial wisdom and help, and start building a house in your financial life that gives God glory. Is your marriage in trouble? Go up the mountain. Face the elephant in the room and address it. Seek out Godly council and get it back where it needs to be so that God can be given glory in the way you live and love your spouse.
Wherever you are, whatever you face, here’s the good news: you’re not alone. Remember. Jesus promised His disciples in John 14:12, “Greater.” Through the power of the Holy Spirit, “greater” was and is possible. So what are you waiting for? Go up the mountain. Bring down the timber and build the house.
