10,000 Year Clock

I was reading a story recently about a computer engineer and inventor named Danny Hillis who thinks all types of leaders should care more about the long term future. So what did he do about it? He invented a 10,000-year clock. He explains why: “I wanted to build a clock that ticks once a year. The century hand advances once every 100 years, and the cuckoo comes out on the millennium. I want the cuckoo to come out every millennium for the next 10,000 years.”

Now. I will be honest. I’m not sure how successful these clocks are going to be, but I certainly commend him for the effort. His sole motivation in building the clock is to inspire people to take more responsibility for the future. He hopes the clock will raise the question, “Are we being good ancestors?” and cause people to start projects that will outlast their lifetime.

As I have been preparing the message for my first State of the Church, coming this weekend, I’ve been thinking about that 10,000-year clock and what it looks like to live a life so fully for the gospel that it impacts future generations for the Kingdom of God. That’s some of what’s coming this weekend, friends. In this weekend’s message, I want to share three things specifically with you. One, a word from Luke’s gospel that the Lord has put on my heart for us all to be reminded of as we start another year together. Two, I want to share how your church did in 2021 as, can you believe, we have just closed out another year together. Lastly, I want to do some vision casting forward and share with you where I believe the Lord is calling us to go as we look toward the future.
