It was from a Nazi prison cell in 1943, just weeks before Advent, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German pastor and theologian, wrote the following to a friend:
A prison cell in which one waits, hopes, does various unessential things, and is completely dependent on the fact that the door of freedom has to be opened from the outside, is not a bad picture of Advent.
Shortly after writing those words, Bonhoeffer was executed.
I’ve always been struck by that observation of Bonhoeffer before he left this earth. How true of a statement that was for himself and for all of us.
The door of freedom is still opened from the outside by the coming and second coming of Jesus Christ.
How true. Remember. The season of Advent is not one in which we just look back at Christ coming into the world in small ways. We also look forward being reminded that Christ will come again.
Perhaps there are chains around you today, friend. Remember, Christ is a chain breaker. Freedom can be found. Christ is ALIVE and He holds the keys to death and hell (Rev. 1:18).
Claim freedom.
