Atchafalaya and the Holy Spirit

Ever heard of the Atchafalaya River? It’s a 137 mile-long distributary of the Mississippi River that winds through south central Louisiana and, eventually, empties into the Gulf of Mexico. This little river actually holds great benefit to a lot of people. It serves as a significant source of income for many in the region because of the many industrial and commercial opportunities it offers. Yet, as scenic and productive as it may be, it owes all of its strength to one source: the mighty Mississippi. Why? Because a distributary doesn’t have its own direct water source – it serves as an overflow of something else. Meaning, when the Mississippi is high, the Atchafalaya is high; when the Mississippi is low, the Atchafalaya is low. The big idea here is this: what the Atchafalaya river accomplishes depends wholly on something other than itself.

You know, the church is a lot like the Atchafalaya River. Anything of value that she accomplishes is always tied to her source. So, if she loses connection with it, she loses all power. She dries up and empties.

This Sunday, we’re starting a new series called “Contagious: When Faith Goes Viral.”

In Acts 1:8 Jesus, who was prepping His disciples for the arrival of the Holy Spirit, used a word to describe the coming of the Holy Spirit and what was to be expected. That word? “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.”

Anytime you see the Holy Spirit move, you see a mighty rushing movement of God’s presence that brings about great awakening moments in history. This series is about contagious movements of great power found in the book of Acts that brought about transformation and awakening in the lives of many.

Sunday, join us on Pentecost as we kick off this new series, “Contagious,” with a special guest pastor you may know, Rev. Mark Swayze, bringing our message.

We can’t wait to see what God has in store for us all in the midst of this summer series. We hope you’ll make plans to join us. Sunday will be one you won’t want to miss. Trust us.
