Heard a quote shared by GK Chesterton this morning that I loved.
“Because children have abounding vitality, because they are in spirit fierce and free, therefore they want things repeated and unchanged. They always say, “Do it again”; and the grown-up person does it again until he is nearly dead. For grown-up people are not strong enough to exult in monotony. But perhaps God is strong enough to exult in monotony. It is possible that God says every morning, “Do it again” to the sun; and every evening, “Do it again” to the moon. It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never got tired of making them. It may be that He has the eternal appetite of infancy; for we have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we.”
I love how that quote stirred my heart this morning. It took me back to when my oldest was little. I could pick Nicholas up with my feet while laying on my back and fly him in the air like Superman. Man he loved that (for the record, I plan to reenact that before he goes to college… just building up the courage to ask his 6’2 self to appease his father’s sentimental side). And he NEVER hesitated to ask me to fly him in the air again and again and again. Honestly, it never got old (with the exception of the time he spit up… trust me, that is NEVER a good time to play Superman flying a kid over your face).
I think where this Chesterton quote hit me the hardest was in the category of the “mundane”. Life can just do that sometimes, huh? It can become systematic, predictable and, well, ordinary. But, here’s the thing. With each new day comes a new opportunity to see God move in the way that we love. With each morning that we wake up, we draw into our lungs the goodness of God and, if we are willing, can take that same gift of His love and glory and exhale it onto those we encounter. In fact, if I can say it, right now I very much believe God is showing off all around you. That sad part? We’re too busy living the ordinary to realize we have front row seats to truly witness the extraordinary.
So, today? Watch a sunset. Smile at a stranger and engage them in a conversation. Take note of what God is up to all around you. It’s a pretty spectacular thing to see the Creator at work in our world.
He’s showing off. Don’t miss it.
