Greetings friends,

One of my favorite stories about gratitude comes from the late 1800s. George Muller, who ran an orphanage caring for over 1,000 children, faced a dire situation one morning – there was no food to serve for breakfast. Yet, Muller gathered the children and staff around the empty table and prayed, thanking God for His provision, even though there wasn’t a crumb in sight.

Moments later, there was a knock at the door. A local baker stood before Muller, explaining that he had felt led the night before to start baking bread for the orphanage. As the bread was being brought in, another knock sounded at the door. This time, a milkman, whose cart had broken down nearby, offered all the milk it carried to the children.

How good is the Lord?

Muller had this amazing ability to sit in the trust that, time and time again, the Lord will provide. I love this quote from Muller: “Be assured, if you walk with Him and look to Him, and expect help from Him, He will never fail you.”

There’s certainly a lesson in this story for us all.

Muller’s faith and thanksgiving in the face of uncertainty reminds us of the beauty and importance of gratitude, not just for what we have, but for the God who provides.

Psalm 92:1-2 declares, “It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night” (ESV).

This Thanksgiving, may we all approach the table – and life – with that same faith-filled gratitude. God’s love and faithfulness will never fail, even in those moments where the table feels empty.

Happy Thanksgiving, church family! May our hearts overflow with gratitude for all that the Lord has done.
