“Where words fail, music speaks.” -Hans Christian Anderson
Mid way through my yard detail duties yesterday evening, my ears were filled with a random shuffle to a song by All Sons and Daughters called, “Reason to Sing”. I had heard this particular song many times, but it struck me in such a powerful way last night. It spoke honestly to the doubt and questions we find ourselves asking in the midst of the brokenness that we all too often experience in this world. It’s a cry to our Father that we’re standing in deep water and we’re afraid that we’re going to go under. I love the bridge of the song that asks, “If there’d be a victory, would You sing it over me now? If peace is a melody, would you sing it over me now?”
The lyrics are honest. The words they sing are real. And? It’s OK to make them your prayer.
I’ve been blessed to sit and hear the heart of many friends this week who have found themselves standing in the midst of troubling circumstances, challenging seasons, and trying times. We all find ourselves there at one point or another, don’t we? Part of my learning to live into this new pastoral role I find myself in is fighting the desire to have “all of the right answers” in moments of doubt and questions. It’s in these times we lean into scripture and, “with prayer and petition, present our requests to the Lord” (Phil. 4:6-7) trusting that His peace will meet us wherever we find ourselves in the moment.
Maybe this is you today. Maybe you need a reason to sing? Maybe you’ve lost your voice and you need to know that He’s still holding the whole world in His hand? Take a moment and let this song be your song today. And then? Sit in the peace that comes in knowing He is still at work.
