Ever stopped to consider the purpose of a lighthouse? Seems simple, right? According to my friend, Mr. Webster, it’s defined as, “a tower with a powerful light that is built on or near the shore to guide ships away from danger”. To say that it serves a pretty important purpose is an understatement. The lighthouse is vital in guiding ships safely and keeping them from meeting certain danger.
Now. Here’s another question for you. What happens when a ship ignores the warning of a lighthouse? What would the response of the lighthouse be? Would it jump off its foundation and chase after the ship because it chose to ignore its initial warning? Though it’s an entertaining thought, the answer is “no”. The purpose of the lighthouse is to guide, shine its light and warn. If the ship chooses to ignore it, it must stand its ground, shine its light and hope the ship comes back around.
Loving people and living and shining God’s love can very much be just like that lighthouse. But what happens when those don’t follow our encouragement, accept our love and walk away from the truth of God’s call in their lives? We can chase after them. That’s one option. But, again, if the lighthouse chooses to jump off its foundation and chase the ships in circles depleting its energy and leaving itself empty at the end of each day, has anyone truly been helped?
I loved reading this analogy from a friend, Sarah Cunningham, in her book The Well-Balanced World Changer. Can we find some peace with being a lighthouse? Read on:
“We can do this. Plant ourselves in our communities and make our purposes and commitments clear. We can reach out to those in need, express interest in supporting their well-being. But we don’t have to frazzle ourselves chasing them in circles. Instead, we shine light strong and steady. And when they go through their cycles and pass by us again, we keep shining light. We persevere to shine it on them every time they pass. And eventually, when they are ready and tired of darkness, they may very well come to a place where the light starts to look good and they’re more interested in staying in a sunnier, healthier, happier place. And then what? Well then, thank God, we still have energy left to be of service.”
I have to say, there’s beautiful freedom and truth in this message. Don’t forget. You are called to be light. Jesus says,
“And you, beloved, are the light of the world. A city built on a hilltop cannot be hidden. Similarly it would be silly to light a lamp and then hide it under a bowl. When someone lights a lamp, she puts it on a table or a desk or a chair, and the light illumines the entire house. You are like that illuminating light. Let your light shine everywhere you go, that you may illumine creation, so men and women everywhere may see your good actions, may see creation at its fullest, may see your devotion to Me, and may turn and praise your Father in heaven because of it.” -Matthew 5:14-16 (Voice)
That’s our call. And, in the midst of our obedience, may God bring those into His presence through the power of the Holy Spirit at work in their lives.
Shine on, lighthouses.
