It’s always a fun moment when a song comes on the radio and I hear a lyric or I sing something in worship on Sunday morning and God nudges me to remind me of what it is I am actually saying. Have you ever done that? Just yesterday I was listening to a worship album on my drive to church when a song came on that we have done many times in FAITHLink. But, on this day, it was different. The song is called, “Always”. It’s a reminder that God is with us in all circumstances. I get that, and I HOLD to that truth dearly. But the lyric that shook me? Mid way through the song, the bridge cries out, “I lift my eyes up, my help comes from the Lord” (see Psalm 121 below).
Let’s be honest. Life can just be stressful. The walls can feel like they are closing in and you can’t see over that “thing” that is looking you square in the eyes right now. But, wait. Take a minute. Go back to those lyrics I heard earlier: “I life my eyes up, my help comes from the Lord”. As I listened to those words being sung, it was as if these words of the Psalmist filled my car on I-49 and I had heard them from the very lips of God. “Lift your eyes, Mark. You are looking at circumstances. You are allowing those obstacles in your life to block your view of me. Lift your eyes. See me. Know that you are not alone.”
Amazing how perspective can change when you allow your heart to see things differently.
The clouds may be present, but the sun is still there. Wherever you find yourself at this place in your life, God is there. Lift your eyes. Know where your help comes from.
Amen!
Psalm 121
A Song for Those Journeying to Worship
1 I look up at the vast size of the mountains—
from where will my help come in times of trouble?
2 The Eternal Creator of heaven and earth and these mountains
will send the help I need.
3 He holds you firmly in place;
He will not let you fall.
He who keeps you will never take His eyes off you and never drift off to sleep.
4 What a relief! The One who watches over Israel
never leaves for rest or sleep.
5 The Eternal keeps you safe,
so close to Him that His shadow is a cooling shade to you.
6 Neither bright light of sun
nor dim light of moon will harm you.
7 The Eternal will keep you safe
from all of life’s evils,
8 From your first breath to the last breath you breathe,
from this day and forever.
