So I’m in the Word this morning and came across this nugget of goodness from the writer of Ecclesiastes:
“Using a dull ax requires great strength, so sharpen the blade. That’s the value of wisdom; it helps you succeed.”
– Ecclesiastes 10:10
I loved finding this verse this morning.
It made me think back to a time when I was a kid that I used my mother’s scissors to cut through some wire. I have no idea why I was cutting wire, but I remember seeing mom’s scissors on the desk and thinking, “These will do.” So, I grabbed them and starting hacking away at the wires I had found. The problem was that they were her sewing scissors. Who knew that scissors weren’t just scissors? So when my mom goes to cut some fabric using the scissors I had lovingly placed back in their original spot, the cuts on the fabric were far from straight. The cut was jagged, frayed and crooked. When my mom figured out that I was the culprit who had dulled her scissors, I was half-afraid she was going to give me a haircut with them as punishment. Luckily, she didn’t. I received grace, instead (and learned what wire cutters were actually for… bonus).
I think this is actually a good illustration for why we should be a people of God’s Word.
When we open God’s Word, God opens His mouth. He speaks directly into our lives through the Holy Spirit at work within those pages, and we’re sharper for it.
That’s why I am so excited about the next nine weeks in Harvest. Beginning this Sunday we’re going to begin a study on the Epistle of James. This is a really practical letter written from James on the topic of faith that works and living a life that reflects the Good News of the Gospel. It’s inspirational, it’s challenging and it’s full of wisdom that meets us today. So, join us on Sunday – and invite some friends to come along with you. I can’t wait to share what God has to say to us all through His Word found in this letter.
