I’ll just go on the record and say it: I’m a terrible cook.
Now, let me clarify. I wouldn’t say that the food I prepare is bad, per se, but here’s where I seem to always fall short: I taste and sample WAY too much before the meal is actually finished. The end result? By the time the food hits the plate, sadly, I have sampled so much that I really don’t have the appetite I did before I actually started the preparation of the meal.
The truth? The same can be done with God as well.
Read on.
“If you don’t feel strong desires for the manifestation of the glory of God, it is not because you have drunk deeply and are satisfied. It is because you have nibbled so long at the table of the world, your soul is stuffed with small things, and there is no room for the great. God did not create you for this. There is an appetite for God. And it can be awakened. ” -John Piper, A Hunger for God
These words in Piper’s book struck me this morning.
I’ll admit it. I nibble. It’s more than just food. I nibble on empty activities. I chew on things like busyness, the latest gossip, and vanity. I taste on things like worry and anxiousness. I grab samples of envy, pride, and desire.
it’s funny. At the end of the day, I am full. Yet, even though I am full, there can still be an emptiness.
Maybe you can relate?
Maybe we need to change our diet.
Taste of His goodness; see how wonderful the Eternal truly is. Anyone who puts trust in Him will be blessed and comforted. Psalm 34:8 (Voice)
May we be aware what we are putting our plates today and may we taste and see that HE is worthy of our attention and time.
